ListGUGMC Organ Transplantation Center Implemented 500 Kidney Transplantation
Gachon University Gil Medical Center(GUGMC) succeeded in the 500th kidney transplant for the first time in Incheon. On the 11th, the hospital's 500th kidney transplant patient was successful.
This is a 51-year-old end-stage renal failure patient who has been undergoing dialysis treatment since 2013. Her daughter in her 20s decided to donate her kidney, but the difficulty of the surgery was high due to the high risk of antibody rejection by the patient. The kidney transplant team at the hospital organ transplant center lowered the sensitivity to antibody rejection (desensitization treatment) from one month ago, and thoroughly prepared for surgery by performing plasma exchange.
Yeon-Ho Park, head of the Organ Transplant Center at GUGMC, said, "All living organ transplants require high-level technologies that require healthy use of both donors and recipients. We will try to perform safe organ transplants based on the hospital's excellent infrastructure such as manpower, facilities, and equipment."

75-Year-Old Patient Suffered from Hepatitis B and Liver Cancer Came to Miracle… Brain-dead Patients Successfully Transplanted Liver
Gachon University Gil Medical Center said on the 16th that Shin Geum-rye (75), who was accompanied by liver cancer and hepatitis B, returned to his daily life in good health after receiving a liver transplant last year. Shin visited the hospital in August last year complaining of symptoms such as jaundice and fatigue. Shin was a hepatitis B carrier and had advanced liver cancer as a result of the test. He was transferred to an intensive care unit for treatment, but his condition deteriorated rapidly.
Liver transplantation is a highly advanced operation that requires connecting numerous blood vessels. Even after transplantation, there is a high probability of complications such as vascular anastomosis. Unlike living liver transplantation, in which a living person's liver is partially removed and transplanted, there is a risk in that the surgery date cannot be set in consideration of the patient's health condition. The survival rate for more than 1 year after transplantation is also higher in living liver transplantation.
Professor Doo-jin Kim, who was in charge of the surgery, said, "The elderly have relatively poor lung and kidney functions after transplantation and are vulnerable to infection, so we have to consider it more".

Gil Medical Center "Successfully performed artificial blood vessel 'Super HeRO' for end-stage renal failure"… First in Gyeongin Region
GUGMC announced on the 3rd that it succeeded in performing the "Super HeRO" procedure, which combines artificial blood vessels with existing dialysis catheters, for the first time in the Gyeongin region. It is expected to be good news for patients with end-stage renal failure who cannot make dialysis routes using self- or artificial blood vessels in their arms due to central vein stenosis.
Chronic renal failure is common in the elderly in their 60s and 70s with renal function deteriorating for more than 3 months and kidney damage continuing to progress. Dialysis is a lifeline for patients who need hemodialysis due to end-stage chronic renal failure. In the case of central venous stenosis, the dialysis route cannot be secured, so long-term dialysis may be dependent on a dialysis catheter.
The problem is that if a dialysis catheter is placed for a long time, side effects such as infection and thrombus production may occur, resulting in fatal consequences. The key to Super HeRO treatment is to prevent various complications such as mechanical abnormalities, thrombosis, obstruction, and infection caused by inserting only a catheter into the arm due to deep vein stenosis. Delicate and meticulous procedures by medical staff are required. Patients undergoing the procedure can receive dialysis more smoothly and the incidence of related complications decreases.
